From Raffles Institution to Republic Polytechnic: My Journey After Dropping Out Due to Family Abuse

By lovemyself_lifesucks

Years ago, I had to drop out of Raffles Institution (RI) because life at home became overly unbearable. My parents were turning abusive, and I no longer had a safe place to stay. Which meant I also needed to find a job to support myself.

Suffice to say, it wasn’t an easy choice. Like everyone else, I had dreams, including continuing my education, then again they were put on hold indefinitely. I struggled to stay afloat on a day-to-day basis (both financially and mentally), whilst figuring out how to hang in there without breaking completely.

Now, after all those years, I am finally going back to school, after Republic Polytechnic (RP) accorded me a spot. It’s not just about academics, it’s about reclaiming a part of myself I was forced to leave behind. I am no doubt both nervous and scared, but also tremendously excited. I reckon this is my second chance at beginning anew.

I decided to share my personal tribulations because I know some of you might be feeling stuck, thinking it’s too late to start from scratch or rebuild your lives. Well, never say never. Even after being in the doldrums for eons, it’s always still possible to strive for yourself and your future.

Don't give up. Ever. Yes, I quitted Raffles Institution — so what? I have endured things, things so terrible most people couldn’t even fathom.

And yet...I am still here. I remain standing. I shall soon enrol in a polytechnic to pick up where I left off. That’s proof of one's indomitable spirit. That’s proof no matter what curveballs life throw at you, you can rise, fight, and keep going.
