It's a Wide-Eyed Wonderful World of Chemistry!

I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to teach in a neighborhood junior college as well as a renowned IP school. These experiences have allowed me to develop an ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds and abilities.

Cambridge’s current emphasis is on application rather than regurgitation. To help students understand and remember better, my approach has been to identify ‘patterns’ wherever possible, and apply these ‘patterns’ in different contexts. While a certain degree of memory work is inevitable, I do discourage my students from rote-learning concepts without understanding them.

I believe my role as a private tutor is to complement, and not duplicate, the role of a school teacher. I do not like the idea of ‘re-lecturing’ all the topics that have been taught in school. I also do not like the idea of my students presenting to me their tutorial worksheets and expecting me to provide all the solutions for them. I expect my students to have paid attention in class and complete their tutorials on their own. During my lessons, I will then answer any queries that they may have regarding their lectures or tutorials, or go through the difficult concepts again.

I sometimes give quite a lot of homework, particularly for the bigger topics. I believe practice is necessary for the better understanding and application of concepts in a variety of contexts. These questions also help me identify any misconceptions that students may have. My students must therefore be mentally prepared to work hard in order that we have a fruitful lesson.
