How an AI accusation by NTU ruined my degree - and how no one in the school helped

By CurveSad2086

Last semester, I was accused of GenAI usage by my professor.

The reason? I made 3 citation mistakes/typos. (FYI: There were 20 correct citations btw, but the professor chose to ignore them completely. She also insisted I used AI on grounds I had put my citations in alphabetical order by means of a sorter???)

This culminated in a 0 grade awarded, thus naturally causing my GPA to skydive; my record is now tarred with a permanent blot stating I’m an academic fraud.

I pleaded for leniency during the hearing (which I recorded), however she declared there shall be “no room for negotiation”.

I did whatever one could possibly think of to prove my essay was indeed conceived from scratch. I submitted my Google docs version history, I produced all previously drafted versions, hell I even paid $10 for a Draftback extension that converts my Google docs typing process into a video depicting my writing flow. In addition to these, I tendered my previous essays for other modules to further reinforce the notion of consistency regarding my writing style.

I emailed every higher-up at NTU: Head of academics, the dean, the president, head of student services. No responses, or a curt single liner informing me my professor's judgment was correct and I should instead “seek the university’s welfare services.”

I attended my MP’s Meet-The-People session seeking redress, whereupon a volunteer helper said he’ll “write a letter”. No updates either.

Given the appeal deadline is next Monday, I have been continually firing off emails to various school staff for the past two weeks asking for an opportunity to clarify in person. Laughably, a consultation got scheduled on Tuesday since the relevant administrators will only return from overseas then.

So here you go, I am left to my own devices.

I hope my most unfortunate predicament helps shed light on NTU's immense failings - a sheer amount of bureaucracy plus the lack of proper guidelines surrounding such an important new piece of technology .

I know many professors usually tread carefully, rationally when students’ assignments are flagged for AI use.

But there are those whose first instinct is to destroy a student’s academic career.

For a university proudly boasting about being ranked #12 on the QS rankings, there is nothing more overtly shameful than possessing farcical student support mechanisms.

AI is terrifying.

What we’re witnessing is the beginning of machine overreach, where a predictive algorithm has more power over a student’s future than their years of study, integrity, and intent. And I’m warning all students here that this can befall anyone.

My GPA pretty much screams junk at this point, while future employers will construe me as a phony over something I did not commmit.

When such incidents happen, some Universities do NOT give two hoots about your well-being. Like NTU.

I can't thank AI enough for how much it has helped me.

Why are NTU students so outraged at their university?

What's up with so many NTU students touting MLM/pyramid schemes?
