'Resembles the prison chow featured in a Channel NewsAsia documentary': Photos of catered bentos served at Hwa Chong Institution draw online flak

Snapshots of prepackaged meals that had been purportedly meted out to secondary students at Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) recently made rounds on social media, attracting much attention albeit for the wrong reasons. The school switched to a hybrid canteen model beginning January 2026, where both students and staff could choose between fare whipped up by physical stalls and ready-to-eat lunch bentos sold by airline caterer Sats.

Two such photos (see above) showed hefty rice portions flanked by comparatively miserable quantities of vegetables as well as undecipherable mishmashes - all shovelled into cyan-hued, compartmentalized plastic trays.

The backlash by netizens subsequently came hurtling, amongst their (unforgiving) comments were the following:

"Looks worse than the cookhouse food Basic Military Training (BMT) recruits consume at Pulau Tekong."

"Resembles the prison chow featured in a Channel NewsAsia (CNA) documentary."

"Genuinely depressing-looking shit, no shit."

"Check out the tasteless reddish goop - a specialty of every Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) cookhouse."

"Food ain't even nutritious: missing key proteins, fats plus calcium necessary for growing teenagers."

"Honestly pathetic for a "first" world country. Have a gander at Japanese and Koreans school meals, those are way more palatable. Besides, their children also developed into healthier and taller adults."

"In a few years our vacuous government will wonder why kids possess an even sicker relationship with food than now."

"Someone please tell them World War II is over, there's no need to eat like this any more."

"Imagine paying $350 a month in school fees, only to find onself privy to such atrocious tripe."

"I can already sense some generational trauma gestating..."

"The biggest winner is the catering company involved, nuff said."

What about you? What do you reckon?
