Failing promos in JC1-what to do next

A parent whose child scored disastrously for the promotional examinations last year has been seeking opinions in forums about whether to let her child attempt the re-exam this month or simply repeat JC1. A junior college maths teacher who goes by the online moniker FrekiWang provides a dissection of the viability of the possible options:

"First of all, I must say JC curriculum is not easy, as it is specifically designed for the top 20% of secondary school graduates in Singapore.

Regarding the retaining rate, I think MOE has made it very strict to all the JCs. Those top JCs, like RJC, HCJC, VJC, NJC ... should not have more than 2% of retainees; JCs like IJC, YJC should not have more than 20%; and other JCs are having different rates capped at the percentage between 2% and 20% respectively. These rates are directly related to the COP of these JCs, in general, if a JC's intake is better, the retaining rate should be lower.

If your child has been working relatively hard comparing to his/her classmates but still cannot meet the promo criteria, I would recommend repeating JC1 (or consider to transfer to a poly). A marginal promotion may not help your child and it is very likely for a student as such to fail to attain quality grades for admissions to local universities.

If your child had been playful to a certain extent previously and failed to pass the promo exams marginally, he/she should aim to clear the re-exam as far as possible. Of course, a change in attitude is a must for JC2 studies.
