JC student made to stand by PRC Chinese teacher at NUS |

About two or three months back, I attended an indelible Chemistry Olympiad training session at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on some advanced topic which I can't recall offhand; approximately 30 students from various junior colleges (JCs) were present. At the end of it, a 30-minute quiz was administered to gauge our understanding of things. One of the teachers who's from Mainland China (he previously graduated from Peking University and attained his PhD thereafter at NUS; bugger speaks in Mandarin half the time btw) went around distributing quiz papers, informing everyone this was an open-book affair and we could reference our notes. Someone asked: "Could I Goggle for answers online?" What happened next was nothing short of spectacular. The teacher immediately spun around, wagged his finger in the air and lashed out: "谁说Google? (Who mentioned Google?)" Complete silence ensued. Fuming, he repeated his question: “谁说Google?” Determined to uncover the "culprit", he walked up the aisle, stopped and bellowed: "后面那四个给我站起来! (the four sitting in the back row, stand up!)" Yet again, in a simmering tone: “谁说Google???” Practically screaming his face red now: “谁说Google???!!!” That someone finally shot up his hand in admission. The teacher pointed at him, voice still raised: "你这个测试不用做了，就当作不及格。这三十分钟给我罚站！下周你也不用再来了。 (You shall not attempt this quiz, consider you have failed it. Stand yourself up for the remaining 30 minutes! You needn't come for class next week either.) And so the poor kid stood there, head hung down for half an hour straight. Seriously? Making folks stand as punishment? For JC2 students??? Even primary schoolers these days ain't subjected to such an antiquated disciplinary measure. This is the 2020s, not the 1980s, for crying out loud. Besides, we ain't living in goddamn Communist China! |
