National Service severely disadvantages males applying for university admission

By Think_Guess_1119

I am about to enlist for National Service (NS). Personally, I don’t mind serving these two years; if it were up to me, I wouldn’t abolish NS either, because I do appreciate how important it is for national security.

Then again, sometimes I can’t help thinking about how we guys are getting the short end of the stick. For example, if a boy and a girl both apply to a top local university such as the National University of Singapore (NUS) or Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and both end up being rejected, the girl could still take a gap year to embark on internships or garner additional certifications to improve her portfolio before applying once again. Meanwhile, the boy remains stuck with his NS obligations and thus obviously has neither the time nor opportunity to shore up his credentials.

This not omitting the fact that those of us males who successfully secure admission interviews would, in all likelihood, attend them with somewhat physically + emotionally drained states. Unfair much?

Another peeve: the girl shall therefore graduate from university earlier, start earning an income sooner and comparatively accumulate more work experience to the tune of two years' worth.

Balancing defence needs against shortchanging NS enlistees LESS - will a concrete policy fix ever materialize, I wonder?
