Tutor sought advance payment from parent, lashed out in a verbal tirade when rejected

By Justin Lee

I’m sharing this troubling encounter on behalf of my uncle in hopes that it will serve as a cautionary reminder to parents looking to hire tutors for their children.

Last week, he engaged a private tutor named Poh Hong Liang (see photo above, circled in red) who was found through Facebook. Shortly after the first session with my nephew, Mr Poh requested a loan on top of an advance from my uncle out of the blue. Upon being declined, he responded inappropriately - calling my nephew “stupid” and declaring that “only God can teach him.”

More disturbingly, Mr Poh later dispatched a text message directly to my nephew where he made derogatory remarks about my uncle, even threatening the poor boy regarding his future exam grades by claiming he knew various teachers within his school.

As parents and guardians, we entrust tutors not just with academics, but with our children’s confidence and well-being. It is therefore most unsettling to witness such behavior coming from someone expected to be principled and above board.

We urge everyone to be cautious when selecting private tutors, especially those sourced via informal platforms. Always verify references + conduct background checks if possible.

PS: Appended below are screenshots of their Whatsapp exchanges, as well as the intimidating message Mr Poh subsequently fired off to my nephew.
